Happy New Year to all! Erik and I hope everyone had a nice holiday. We did a social distanced holiday, and are looking forward to the time when the holiday festivities amount to something more than wearing Christmas themed masks.
We continue to take advantage of the winter weather for new activities. Why not brew some beer? Armed with ingredients from our local home brew store, Callooh! Callay! has transformed into a brewery. Cooking the wort is the best part. It warms up the boat and the hops smell is wonderful. Note – this is an older picture with Erik sans beard. He is now sporting a full set of whiskers for the winter.
The cold weather is perfect for fermenting a lager and the beer happily bubbled away in our quarter berth. Then it was time for siphoning off the beer in preparation for “lagering”.
The winter season so far has brought numerous strong storm fronts with gale force winds. We were excited when there was a break in the weather and finally got out for a sail.
Karen can’t contain her excitement to get off the dock and enjoy sailing on a beautiful day. What to do when you want to go sailing and your beer is still lagering in it’s fermentation vessel? No problem.
Erik the brewmaster taking his beer for a sail.
It was admittedly a bit chilly, but the wind was perfect and the scenery fantastic. We had a great time. Back at the dock, the otters don’t seem to mind the cold at all.
The next day, we headed out to the mountains to go snowshoeing. There were storms that predicted 4 to 6 feet of additional snow for the week and we wanted to get our snowshoe in before the avalanche risk was impacted. It is a good thing we went when we did. The big snows came and now the avalanche forecast indicates it will be “no go” for at least several days. Fantastic scenery and great exercise!
Yesterday marked the one year anniversary for our adventure, having departed Miami on New Year’s Eve. Looking forward to adventures to come!

Happy adventure-versary! 🙂 I believe otters have the thickest/densest fur of any animal, that’s why it ain’t no thing for them to swim in the frigid water. The scenery is spectacular — enjoy!

wishing we had some of that fur at times

Happy 2021 you guys, and I like how you’ve created a little floating home: warmth, brew, knife magnet, cool boots…looking good. We all miss you here, of course. Virus would have dampened your trad holiday gatherings, but still.
Thanks for the update, photos. Any plans longer term?
I’m shooting for Bahamas…after vaccinations and numbers going down. ? March: who knows? Here’s friends of friends web vlog:
